(Video) AMAZING 10 Must-Visit Destinations in TURKS & CAICOS (Travel Guide)

A British dependency in Central America, the Turks and Caicos Islands are a group of about 40 islands with a total area of 430 km2 in the Atlantic Ocean, southeast of the Bahamas and north of Haiti. The islands are divided into two groups by the Turks Strait: Turks Islands to the east (main islands: Grand Turk and Salt Cay) and Caicos Islands to the west (largest islands: North Caicos, Grand Caicos, East Caicos, and Providenciales). Because of their location, the Turks and Caicos Islands, particularly Grand Turk Island, are a stopover on the cruise itinerary and the country is primarily visited by cruise tourists who want to visit several idyllic Caribbean islands in one voyage.

natural conditions

The Turks and Caicos Islands originate from reefs and emerged in the Quaternary. The islands are composed of calcareous deposits (organodetrital, reef and oolite limestone). The territory of the islands is characterized by a very flat relief, almost entirely without pronounced hills. The average elevation of the islands is several meters above sea level, and the highest elevation of the Blue Hills on Providenciales Island is 49 meters above sea level. The islands of the Caicos group have a well-developed coastline with numerous deep and narrow bays that create ideal conditions for intimate relaxation. The islands are largely surrounded by coral reefs, making them a long-time destination for diving enthusiasts. The dive sites around North Caicos and Providenciales abound with shallow coral gardens and sheer cliffs with excellent visibility. The shores of the islands are low, beach and reef, in places also mangroves. There are swampy areas on the Turks and Caicos Islands. The islands are characterized by karst phenomena. Due to the geology of the islands, there is very little surface water and virtually no river network. Surface waters are saline in many places, resulting in a high freshwater deficit (rainwater is collected for this purpose).
The vegetation of the islands consists mainly of dry growth and savanna-type cacti, between which there are shallow depressions of former salt ponds. The palm trees typical of this region of the world grow on the islands and mangrove forests can be found on the coasts. The greenest island is North Caicos, which gets the most rain.
In the animal world there are almost no land mammals. On the islands, animals that live aquatic or lead an amphibious lifestyle are dominant, namely: numerous species of birds (e.g. flamingos on North Caicos), sea turtles, crustaceans (e.g. crayfish), many species of fish. Tourists vacationing in the Turks and Caicos Islands from January to April should definitely take a boat trip towards the island of Haiti after the whale mating season.

Religion ClimateKitchen

The Turks and Caicos Islands are predominantly Protestant (73%), mostly Baptists. Almost 12% of the islanders are Catholic. Polish tourists spending their holidays in Turks and Caicos Islands should respect the religion and customs of the local population.

Climate

The islands have a subtropical climate. The climate of the Turks and Caicos Islands is influenced by the mild and comfortably cool trade winds that blow from the northeast. The average annual temperature on the Turks and Caicos Islands is 26 °C. In summer the sun rises around 6:00 am and sets at 7:00 pm, while in winter the day is shorter - sunrise is at 6:30 am and sunset is at 5:00 pm. Tropical hurricanes can hit the islands from mid-August to late October. Despite frequent hurricanes, the average annual rainfall is only 400–800 mm.

When to go to Turks and Caicos Islands?
Due to the most favorable weather conditions, the winter and spring months are the best times to travel to the Turks and Caicos Islands. Rainfall is low during this period (a little over 50 mm per month in January and February) and the temperature varies between 22 and 26 °C.
In late summer and fall, the Turks and Caicos Islands are hit by hurricanes and heavier rainfall (especially in August and September). As such, this is not a good time to travel to the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Kitchen

The Turks and Caicos Islands do not have their own distinctive cuisine. Typical American and African dishes are popular on the islands. The basis of the islands' cuisine is fish and shellfish, as well as rice and corn. Tourists vacationing in the Turks and Caicos Islands should definitely try a traditional island dish called grits, a dish made from dried clams or dried peas and local vegetables, as well as chicken or fish. While on vacation in the Turks and Caicos Islands, it is also worth trying rum from Providenciales Island.
The restaurants serve local dishes (e.g. based on fresh fish and seafood) and international dishes, mainly Caribbean, Mexican, Chinese, French and Italian.
